Leak free exhaust system
Koenigsegg Automotive AB (KGG) has conducted an engineering analysis of the complete exhaust
system to ensure that the exhaust system has been designed:
(A) To facilitate leak-free assembly, installation and operation for the full useful life of the vehicle; and
(B) To facilitate that such repairs as might be necessary on a properly maintained and used vehicle
can be performed in such a manner as to maintain leak-free operation, using tools commonly available
in a motor vehicle dealership or independent repair shop for the full useful life of the vehicle.
The analysis covered the exhaust system and all related and attached components, from the engine
block manifold gasket surface to a point sufficiently past the last catalyst and oxygen sensor in the
system to assure that leaks beyond that point will not permit air to reach the oxygen sensor or catalyst
under normal operating conditions.
The design does not require any special tools or procedures for service or replacement.
In addition, a complete leak detection test is performed on every production car as part of the predelivery inspection. KGG has a 100% pass rate for this test.
The analysis performed in conjunction with the production conformity testing confirms that vehicles
produced by KGG fulfill the leak-free exhaust system requirements.

11.2 Engine Control functions / Justification
•
Fuel Injection Control
The base fuel injection schedule is calculated based on several inputs, e.g. manifold air pressure,
intake air temperature, mass air flow, barometric pressure, throttle position, coolant temperature,
battery voltage, fuel rail temperature/pressure. During closed-loop fueling the oxygen sensor signals,
upstream as well as downstream of the catalysts, are used to fine tune the amount of fuel to be
injected to keep the A/F ratio at Lambda=1.
The target is to enter closed-loop fueling as soon as possible after engine starting. The oxygen sensor
heater starts with a low level of heater power to prevent sensor chip damages due to water in the
exhaust system. As the dew point has been exceeded, the heater power is increased until the oxygen
sensor readiness is achieved and the sensor signal is considered ready for closed-loop control.
The following condition is required for oxygen sensor readiness:
• Oxygen sensor temperature achieved
The following conditions are required to enter closed-loop fueling:
• Minimum number of combustions
• Oxygen sensor readiness
Closed loop condition is normally reached within 10-20 seconds under room temperature cold start
FTP75 conditions.
The fuel system will run in open-loop or non-stochiometric conditions under the following conditions:
•
Engine starting open loop, the target Lambda is based on engine coolant temperature at
start.
o Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions

•
After starting open loop, target Lambda is based on engine coolant temperature at starting.
Target is Lambda=1 at starting temperatures above approx. 50 degrees F, and slightly richer
at lower temperatures. The fuel control runs in open loop until closed loop entry conditions
have been fulfilled.
o Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions
•
Throttle transient open loop. Pre-control to being able to achieve a combustion chamber
Lambda at target for present operating condition. Active for 1 second at big opening and
closing transients.
o Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions
•
Exhaust gas temperature reduction enrichment. Closed loop to non-stochiometric targets
based on engine speed/load. Further details given in Section 11.3 of this document.
o Justification: Engine and component protection
•
Deceleration fuel-cut open loop
o Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions
•
Oxygen sensor failures open loop, where the O2 sensor signals are not sufficient for closed
loop operation
o Justification: Open-loop operation based on malfunction detection and indication by
OBD-system. Closed-loop not possible with malfunctioning sensors.
•
Traction control active, open loop. Torque reduction is done by limiting the throttle angle as
well as cutting fuel and retarding timing. As the fuel is cut, the oxygen sensor can’t make a
reliable exhaust oxygen content measurement with some cylinders pumping pure air.
o Justification: A very rapid torque reduction is required for vehicle dynamics safety
reasons due to the extreme performance characteristics of the Koenigsegg vehicles.
•
Electronic Throttle Control
Engine speed and torque is controlled by electronic throttle control. The ECM sends a signal to the
actuator depending on a number of inputs, the major one being the Accelerator Pedal Position sensor.
o
•
Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions.
Ignition Timing Control
Depending on the operating status regarding engine speed and battery voltage, the ECM calculates
the dwell angle and the opening angles of the ignition coil using a characteristic map and passes this
signal to the power stage. The output stages close and open the primary circuit of the ignition coil. The
secondary voltage which is induced as the primary coil circuit is opened passes from the ignition coil
to the spark plugs. There are no adjustments possible on the ignition system. When the knock sensors
detect combustion knock, the timing is retarded until the knocking stops.
o
Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions.

Purge Control
The purge air is controlled by the solenoid valve. The solenoid valve is controlled by the ECM based
on the information on O2 sensor, and temperature and pressure sensors.
The combustion engine is equipped with two turbochargers. Due to the relation of the large engine
displacement in a vehicle with low weight and aerodynamic drag, sufficient purge flow volume over a
wide vehicle operating range is achieved with one low load purge path. Hence, there is no purge
during extreme power outputs as there is no intake manifold vacuum during boost conditions.
o
•
Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions.
Waste Gate Control
The engine is equipped with two turbochargers, one unit per cylinder bank. The ECM controls the
wastegate valves for appropriate turbo boost/engine output, for exhaust flow through the pre-catalysts,
and for protection of the engine from potentially engine damaging over-boost conditions.
o
•
Justification: The pre-catalyst flow control operates in the FTP test conditions. Engine output
wastegate control is essential for safe operation of the vehicle as well as for engine protection.
Turbo Isolation Throttle for Cold Start (TITC) Throttle Control
The turbocharger system has a cold start optimization layout which incorporates a Turbo Isolation
Throttle for Cold start (TITC). The TITC system effectively isolates the turbos using backpressure
during cold starts and low load driving. This feeds all exhaust directly to the pre-cat, giving very rapid
light off times. The ECM controls the throttles, isolating the turbos during cold start and normal load.
Throttles open during high load to activate the turbos and reduce loading on the pre-catalyst.
o
•
Justification: The system is designed for pre-catalyst protection purposes.
Fuel Pump Control
The vehicle is equipped with a returnless fuel system. The ECM runs a closed-loop control of the fuel
pressure by measuring the fuel rail pressure and sending a pump speed request to the fuel pump.
During engine start-up, the fuel pump control will run in open loop.
o
•
Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions.
Oxygen Sensor Heater Control
The ECM controls the heating current for all exhaust oxygen sensors. At certain engine starting
conditions there is a risk of water being adsorbed in the porous ceramic oxygen sensor element.
Should full heater power be commanded in these conditions, there is a risk of fractures to the oxygen
sensor element. To prevent this, an ECM function has been implemented which will ramp up the
heater power at a rate which will prevent water related damages. Due to this function the oxygen
sensor readiness, and consequently closed loop fueling control, can be delayed slightly at low

temperatures. However, this functionality is active during all emissions testing, including cold
CO/NMHC-testing.
o
•
Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions.
Cooling Fans Control
The ECM controls the water coolant, A/C condenser, and intercooler fans based on the various
systems’ cooling requirements.
o
•
Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions
Generator Control
The ECM sends a charging request to the generator based on the system voltage. The same charging
strategy is used under all operating conditions.
o
•
Justification: Operates in the FTP test conditions
Air Conditioning Compressor Displacement Control
The ECM controls the Air Conditioning Compressor Displacement mainly based on the air conditioning
system pressure. Under high engine speeds, the displacement is reduced to prevent failures to the air
conditioning compressor.
o
Justification: Operates in the SC03 test conditions, and is a component protection strategy

11.3 Enrichment – protection
Temperature limitation through fueling enrichment is used to protect the following
components/systems:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Internal engine components, pistons, exhaust valves, spark plugs
Catalytic converters
Turbochargers
Exhaust manifolds
Exhaust Turbo Isolation Throttle for Cold start (TITC)
Oxygen sensors
The turbocharger exhaust turbines and turbine housings have been found to be the limiting
components. The exhaust gas temperature calibration target temperature is set to 950°C.
At cruise conditions, Lambda=1 is expected to be maintained at vehicle speeds approaching 140
MPH.
11.4 Adaptations
•
•
•
•
•
•
Fuel trim. In controlled engine operating conditions, the short term fueling is monitored.
Should there be an offset, a correction factor is added globally to the base fuel schedule.
Purge. In controlled engine operating conditions, the purge gas hydrocarbon fuel
concentration is measured via the short term fueling. A correction factor is added to the base
fuel schedule to compensate for the purge gas hydrocarbon concentration.
Accelerator pedal learning. Is performed for the system to learn the min and max positions
of the accelerator pedal position sensor. The ECM sets the initial sensor values slightly high
for the min value and slightly low for the max value. As the system detects values outside of
the preset range while driving, the min and max values are adjusted accordingly. The
adaptation is done once and the results and kept in keep-alive memory. Should the ECM lose
its power, or be reprogrammed, the adaptation is done again.
Throttle position learning. Is performed for the system to learn the min and max positions of
the throttle blade. The adaptation is done by sweeping the full operating range to detect the
min and max positions. This is done once and the results are kept in keep-alive memory.
Should the ECM lose its power, or be reprogrammed, the adaptation is done again.
Idle speed control. Throttle idle position preset adjustment.
Boost Wastegate control. Wastegate control preset adjustment.
11.5 Intrusive OBD Monitors
•
•
•
Catalyst monitor. When entering the catalyst monitor, the fuel control is set to fixed values
close to Lambda=1, in the order lean-rich-lean, to measure the oxygen storage capacity of the
catalysts by observing the downstream O2 sensor responses to the air/fuel changes.
O2 sensor monitor. The fuel control is commanded with pre-set lean and rich steps to fixed
values close to Lambda=1 for verification of the O2 sensor signal response.
EVAP leak check monitor. During execution of the test, the vapor canister ventilation shut-off
valve is closed so seal the evaporative control system. Also, the canister purge valve is
commanded according to a pre-set scheme for evaluation of the fuel tank pressure behavior.

Exhaust TITC. During start-up of the engine, the exhaust throttles are commanded to sweep
over their full operating range to verify their movement.
11.6 Default actions
For component protection and to ensure the safe operation of vehicles, default actions are used when
certain failures have been detected.
The system uses three different default action performance reduction strategies depending on the
nature of the fault as follows:
•
Engine output reduction through default to base boost, OBD-related failures
o Fuel pump control faults
o O2 sensor signal faults
o Manifold Air Pressure sensor signal faults
•
Engine output reduction through throttle opening limitation, OBD-related failures
o Fuel pump control faults
o O2 sensor signals faults
o Manifold Air Pressure sensor signal faults
o Accelerator pedal sensor faults
•
Vehicle speed limitation to approximately 95 MPH, non OBD-related failures
o Vehicle dynamics control faults
